How to Get Your Free Home Energy Audit
At Climate Giant, we make the process of getting a FREE Home Energy Audit through the NYS Empower+ Program simple and stress-free. Here’s how it works:
Step 1
Fill Out the Application
Start by completing the online application on our website. Don’t worry if you don’t have all the details—just fill in what you can, and we’ll help with the rest. You’ll need a recent RG&E bill with your account number and proof of income, such as pay stubs or SNAP/HEAP award letters.
Step 2
Application Review & Approval
Once submitted, we’ll review your application to ensure everything is accurate before sending it to the state for approval. The approval process may take a few weeks, but we’ll keep you updated every step of the way.
Step 3
Schedule Your Home Energy Audit
After approval, we’ll contact you to schedule your free home energy audit. This in-depth inspection takes about three hours and includes identifying energy inefficiencies, checking insulation levels, and providing immediate upgrades like LED lightbulbs, smoke and CO detectors, and furnace filters.
Step 4
Receive Your Energy-Saving Plan
Once the audit is complete, we’ll determine what improvements your home qualifies for. Depending on eligibility, you could receive free or low-cost insulation, air sealing, and other energy-saving upgrades to make your home more efficient and comfortable.

The EmPower+ Program Offers The Following Incentives

No-Cost UPGRADES
Low-income, single-family households can receive up to $10,000 in no-cost energy efficiency upgrades per project. These upgrades can be installed directly by participating program contractors, ensuring a hassle-free process.

DISCOUNTED UPGRADES
Moderate-income single-family households are eligible for a discount of up to 50% of the cost of eligible work capped at $5,000 per project. These upgrades can be installed directly by participating program contractors, ensuring a hassle-free process.

SPECIAL FINANCING
Customers can apply for low-interest financing through NYSERDA’s Residential Financing offers. NYSERDA offers a suite of loans to help New York State residents finance energy efficiency improvements and clean energy equipment.

Is EmPower+ really free?
Yes—State residents meeting EmPower+ eligibility requirements can receive home energy services through the program at no cost.
Who pays for the energy services delivered through EmPower+?
The program is funded through a “System Benefits Charge” included in the bills of participating electric and natural gas utilities. This means that everyone who is a customer of a participating utility is chipping in to pay for this program. Additional funding is provided from other sources as well, such as the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, which provides funding for energy efficiency upgrades to lower carbon emissions.
How do I know if I qualify?
You may be eligible if the following are true:
- Your total household gross income meets the income guidelines or if you are receiving HEAP, SNAP, or public assistance.
- You are an electricity or natural gas customer of Central Hudson, Con Edison, National Fuel, National Grid (Upstate, Metro and Long Island), NYSEG, Orange and Rockland, Rochester Gas & Electric—or heat with oil, propane, kerosene, wood, coal, or pellets.
- The person on the utility account resides in the household.
- You reside in a building with 100 units or less.
Does EmPower+ provide services to renters?
Yes—EmPower+ provides energy services to anyone who owns or rents a home and meets all of the eligibility requirements.
What are some of the no-cost energy services that EmPower+ may provide?
